Interim Managing Director (9-Month Paternity Cover)

Ember, a leading global energy think tank, is seeking an Interim Managing Director to cover a 9-month paternity leave period. This full-time, remote role requires a visionary leader to guide an international team of 80 professionals spread across 19 countries and support its senior leadership through a time of strategic consolidation and continued impact.

About the Company:
Founded in 2020, Ember is an independent, not-for-profit energy think tank accelerating the clean energy transition through high-quality data, policy analysis, and strategic communications. Ember is globally recognized for its work on electricity transition and coal mine methane emissions, aiming to influence both global narratives and national energy policies. The organization is funded by prominent philanthropic foundations and operates with a remote-first culture.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and empower Ember’s six senior directors and their respective global teams.

  • Implement and support the Organisation Strategy for 2026.

  • Maintain oversight of Ember’s £6 million annual budget.

  • Drive fundraising efforts and manage key funder relationships.

  • Strengthen Ember’s international presence, particularly in Asia.

  • Identify new areas for impact, including expansion of coal mine methane work.

  • Represent Ember with internal and external stakeholders, including funders and global partners.

  • Lead quarterly Board meetings and ensure effective governance communication.

Requirements:

  • Proven senior management experience, preferably within the clean energy or non-profit sector.

  • Experience working with global philanthropic organizations.

  • Strategic vision in energy transition, ideally with an international scope.

  • Ability to foster a collaborative, low-ego, high-trust team culture.

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.

  • Strong decision-making and financial oversight capabilities.

  • Based within GMT to GMT+8 time zones with the ability to travel for occasional in-person meetings.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A strong network in the climate and energy sector.

  • Prior experience engaging with advisory and management Boards.

  • Demonstrated expertise in electricity transition and data-driven policy influence.

  • Passion for using open data and research to enable meaningful global change.

Contract Details & Benefits:

  • Salary: £89,000 – £100,000 per annum, pro-rata (subject to location-based adjustments, minimum 75% of base).

  • Contract Type: Fixed-term, from October 1 to June 30 (some flexibility available).

  • Work Model: Remote, full-time (9-day fortnight, i.e., every other Friday off). Part-time options considered.

  • Benefits:
