SSMC is seeking an experienced Clinical Coder to accurately review, analyze, and code medical records using ICD-10-CM, CPT, and other classification systems. The role involves coding multiple specialties, mentoring junior coding staff, ensuring compliance with coding standards, collaborating with physicians and Revenue Cycle Management, and maintaining coding accuracy for inpatient, outpatient, and emergency department encounters.

Responsibilities:

• Assign accurate codes for diagnoses, treatments, and procedures across inpatient, outpatient, ED, and observation stays.

• Review provider documentation to determine principal diagnoses, comorbidities, complications, and procedures.

• Adhere to official coding guidelines and clarify diagnosis/procedure information through queries when necessary.

• Assign Present on Admission (POA) values for inpatient diagnoses.

• Ensure correct physician, date, and time information is recorded for services.

• Collaborate with physicians and other departments to prevent denials and resolve coding issues.

• Maintain production and accuracy targets for coding tasks.

• Prepare statistics and reports as requested by management.

• Abide by AHIMA ethical coding standards and official coding guidelines.

• Mentor and provide training to junior coding staff.

Skills & Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management or related field, or Diploma with 3 years additional healthcare experience.

• Minimum 2-4 years of relevant progressive experience as a Clinical Coder.

• Experience in large healthcare facilities is preferred.

• Knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT coding, and medical documentation standards.

• Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple tasks.

• Effective communication and collaboration skills.

• Commitment to accuracy and ethical coding practices.

• Master’s degree in Health Information Management or related field is a plus.
