Technology Innovation Institute (TII)
Dubai , UAE
The Technology Innovation Institute (TII), a world-class publicly funded research center based in Abu Dhabi, is seeking a Lead Researcher specializing in membrane fabrication, water treatment, and advanced materials. This is a full-time, on-site role that offers the opportunity to work with global scientists, engineers, and researchers in tackling critical challenges through pioneering R&D.
Key Responsibilities:
-
Membrane Fabrication & Development: Formulate polymer solutions, optimize spinning/casting processes, and integrate nanomaterials for performance enhancement. Fabricate ceramic membranes using advanced methods and ensure strength, selectivity, and durability.
-
Module Assembly & Process Design: Build UF, NF, RO, FO, and MBR membrane modules; integrate them into pilot-scale systems; design skid-mounted units; and simulate performance metrics.
-
Performance Evaluation: Conduct rigorous testing on seawater, wastewater, and brine. Measure salt rejection, flux, fouling resistance, and chlorine tolerance while characterizing surfaces via SEM, FTIR, AFM, and other tools.
-
Research & Innovation: Develop novel fabrication methods, file patents, publish in high-impact journals, and present at international conferences.
-
Project Management: Define experimental plans, track milestones, document findings, and collaborate with cross-functional teams including materials, chemical, and environmental researchers.
-
Leadership & Mentoring: Train and guide junior researchers, lab technicians, and interns, fostering growth within the research community.
Required Knowledge & Skills:
-
Proven expertise in membrane design, fabrication, and optimization (PVDF, PES, PAN, PTFE).
-
Strong background in ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, forward osmosis, MBR systems, and ceramic membrane production.
-
Deep understanding of brine management, salinity-gradient energy harvesting, electrodialysis reversal, capacitive deionization, and zero liquid discharge systems.
-
Familiarity with digital innovations in water networks such as smart sensing, metering, and water security management.
-
Ability to manage projects, mentor team members, and drive innovation from lab-scale to industrial application.
Education & Experience Requirements:
-
Ph.D. or M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Materials Science, or related fields.
-
5+ years of hands-on experience in membrane fabrication and water treatment systems.
-
Strong publication or patent record demonstrating innovative research contributions.
-
Experience with pilot testing or industrial-scale systems is highly desirable.
-
Excellent communication, technical writing, and project management skills.
