Conservator (Painting, Preventive, Paper/Photograph Conservator)

The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) is actively hiring for several roles within its Conservation team, focusing on the preservation and conservation of artworks and cultural heritage. We are currently seeking qualified Conservators in the following areas:

  • Painting Conservator

  • Preventive Conservation Conservator

  • Paper/Photograph Conservator

These roles involve conducting research, conserving, and documenting artworks in the collection while maintaining environmental conditions for their long-term safety. The Conservators will also work alongside curatorial and facility management teams to ensure the best preservation practices are followed and will provide guidance on collections management, including handling, installation, crating, and exhibition.

Key Responsibilities:

Painting Conservator

  • Research, conserve, and document painting and artworks with painted surfaces.

  • Advise on collections storage and ensure appropriate materials and conditions for conservation.

  • Produce condition reports, identify materials, and conduct artist interviews.

  • Assess acquisition works, research deterioration, and implement conservation treatments.

  • Coordinate scientific analysis and document all treatments and technical information.

  • Evaluate and advise on exhibition and loan conditions, including packing, transport, and display.

Preventive Conservation Conservator

  • Lead preventive conservation efforts for artworks and exhibitions, identifying and mitigating risks.

  • Work with facility management to establish and maintain environmental conditions for the collection.

  • Develop sustainable conservation methodologies and engage in research to identify safe materials.

  • Conduct training on conservation principles, emergency procedures, and safe handling practices.

  • Monitor environmental conditions using data tracking systems to ensure preservation standards are met.

Paper/Photograph Conservator

  • Research and treat works on paper in the collection.

  • Document the condition of paper-based artworks through written reports and imaging techniques.

  • Conduct scientific analysis and evaluate treatment options for paper conservation.

  • Advise on appropriate framing, storage, and display methods for paper and photographic works.

  • Evaluate collection works for loan requests, ensuring safe exhibition, travel, and environmental conditions.

Qualifications:

  • Relevant degree in Conservation, Art History, or a related field.

  • Proven experience in conservation, with a specific focus on paintings, preventive conservation, or paper/photograph conservation.

  • Strong knowledge of conservation practices, materials, and methodologies.

  • Familiarity with scientific analysis techniques and environmental monitoring systems.

  • Experience working with high-value collections and exhibitions is a plus.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Knowledge of Arabic or previous experience working in the UAE is an advantage.
