The Conservation Senior Specialist will oversee the preservation, stabilization, and long-term care of the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi’s collections, including natural history specimens and exhibition materials. This role involves implementing preventive conservation strategies, conducting risk assessments, and collaborating with curators, managers, and researchers to protect collections for research, exhibitions, and public engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop and implement preventive conservation plans to protect collections from physical, chemical, and biological deterioration.

• Conduct condition assessments and develop treatment strategies for at-risk objects, applying ethical and minimally invasive conservation methods.

• Oversee the proper storage, handling, and transportation of collections, ensuring adherence to museum conservation guidelines.

• Advise on climate control, pest management, and environmental monitoring practices in storage and display areas.

• Ensure objects for exhibitions and traveling collections are properly prepared, mounted, and protected.

• Supervise the packing, shipping, and installation of objects, ensuring conservation and security standards are met.

• Collaborate with researchers and external institutions on conservation projects, including applying new materials science and analytical techniques.

• Contribute to conservation research, publishing findings, and presenting at professional forums.

• Develop and enforce conservation policies and emergency response plans for collections.

• Provide training to museum staff, students, and interns on preventive conservation and treatment techniques.

• Ensure compliance with ethical guidelines and international conservation standards.

Job Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Conservation, Conservation Science, Museum Studies, or related field (Master’s degree preferred).

• 5+ years of experience in museum conservation or related scientific research.

• Expertise in preventive conservation, conservation treatments, and environmental monitoring.

• Experience working in natural history museum collections conservation is highly desirable.

• Strong track record of research publication and securing conservation funding.

• Proficiency in conservation science techniques, analytical tools, and imaging technologies.

• Strong leadership, communication, and team collaboration skills.

• Knowledge of museum documentation systems, condition reporting, and conservation databases.
